After reading the mixed reviews on Amazon, I was pretty hesitant about buying this saw. I originally had been considering getting a 10" slider due to cost, but when DeWalt offered the 12" slider with a free work stand, it was worth taking the risk on trying it.
I have been extremely pleased with the saw. First off, to debunk some of the negative reviews; you should never...ever... expect any type of precision power tool to be within spec's out of the box. Too much can happen to it during shipping to knock it out of spec. I recently bought a high end cabinet saw for over $3000, and it was out of spec upon arrival, despite being set at the factory. I anticipate calibrating any tool I buy and checking how accurate it is.
Now, with all that said, my saw was dead on accurate out of the box! I followed all the alignment procedures in the owners/instruction manual (reading instructions is usually not in a male's DNA, but over the years I have found that I have a lot less problems with stuff if I read the provided manuals), and didn't need to adjust anything with the exception of the miter scale pointer, which was off by one degree in the detents. That took all of 20 seconds to correct.
I have read some peculiar grips on this saw. After using it, I surmise a good portion of them come from the DW718not being like the old saw that was just replaced.
This is my first 12" compound slider, so other than using someone else's saw here and there; I had no preconceived notions on what the perfect tool would be. I can say this, the DW718 does exactly what is advertises it does. I did a bunch of research, and watched a bunch of video reviews, and again, most of the grips were of a personal nature. Knobs too small, slides are stiff, too much defection in the head, etc. OK, but you have to ask yourself, "in comparison to what?"
I purposely tried to deflect the head at the extent of the rail travel. It does deflect, but I had to but some elbow grease behind it to do so. When I didn't try to defect the head, it didn't deflect. So I told myself "self, don't try to defect the saw head and let the tool do the work" and so far I haven't had any problems.
I do have a few personal observations to share. Take them for what they are worth to you:
- The DeWalt DW723
miter saw stand it nice, and it has it's uses, but if you are cutting some big stock, the stand does wobble just a touch, which is translated to the saw. For dead on accurate work, I would recommend placing the saw on a more stable counter or tabletop.
- The included blade works well for framing. I recommend getting a better quality blade for fine work
- The DeWalt L.E.D. work light accessory is "Way-Cool" and worth the money. I have a couple shop tools with lasers, and the word "Laser" leads you to think "pin point accuracy. It works better in shade than direct sunlight (after all, it is a shadow), and it is less expensive than the laser.
